Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer a free initial consultation?

Absolutely! At Broad Therapy Services, we offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you get started. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our therapist’s approach, ask any questions about the counselling process, and see if we’re the right fit for you.

If you’re looking to access psychotherapy in Nova Scotia, it’s helpful to first check if your extended health insurance covers counselling services. Start by reviewing your benefits plan—many providers like Blue Cross, Green Shield, Manulife, and Sunlife offer coverage, but plans differ, so it’s best to contact your provider directly. Ask if services with Registered Counselling Therapists (RCTs), psychologists, or social workers (MSWs) are included, and confirm any requirements such as physician referrals (often not needed).

You may also want to ask specific questions: “Does my plan cover psychotherapy?” “Are RCTs covered?” “What is the reimbursement rate or session limit?” Knowing this can help you plan ahead and make the most of your mental health benefits.

At Broad Therapy, we accept payment by credit card, debit, and e-transfer. We also offer direct billing with most major insurance providers. For convenience, clients can securely save a card on file for automatic payment after each session. Please note, fees are non-refundable, and clients are responsible for any charges not covered by their insurance.

Your first session is an intake session where we’ll get to know each other. You’ll have a chance to share what’s bringing you to therapy, and we will ask some questions to better understand how we can support you. It’s also a great time to ask any questions you may have. Together, we’ll create a comprehensive plan to guide your care.

The length of therapy depends on your unique needs, goals, and preferences. Some clients attend short-term therapy focused on a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term support. Together, we’ll make a collaborative decision based on your comfort, the progress we’re making, the treatment approach being used, any funding or insurance coverage available, and whether your goals have been met. Your therapist will check in regularly to ensure the therapy process continues to align with your needs.

Preparing for your online therapy session is simple. Before your appointment, check your email for the secure video link sent through our Jane platform. Choose a device you’re comfortable with—most computers, tablets, or smartphones work well. Make sure you’re in a quiet, private space where you feel safe to talk. Using headphones can help with privacy and sound quality. A strong internet connection is important, so try to stay close to your Wi-Fi router. Set up a cozy spot with a chair, water, tissues, and anything that helps you feel at ease. Keep your phone nearby in case of technical issues. After your session, give yourself a few minutes to relax and ease back into your day.

We understand that unexpected things come up and you may need to reschedule your therapy appointment. You can easily reschedule online or by contacting us directly. We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule your session. If less than 24 hours’ notice is given or you miss your appointment, the full session fee will be charged. This policy helps us offer available time slots to others who may be waiting for support.
